Quarantine, The Loners is a book about a teenager called David and his younger brother Will. It’s Wills first year at Mckinley High School. The school year has just started and once school starts they find out that the school is contaminated with a disease which is fatal to anyone who isn’t a teenager, this means that all the teachers have been killed. The military reacts to this situation by closing the school in making sure no one can leave. Fast forward a year later and the school is divided into factions who fight for survival among their peers. David must do what it takes to protect Will and the ones he cares about even if means risking his own life. In order to protect him and his friends David start his own faction full of ‘loner kids’ who had nowhere to go before. David keeps finding himself in situations where he is being targeted by the two most powerful factions known as ‘Varsity’ and ‘The Pretty Ones’ who go out of their ways to hurt David and his crew.

The story of “Quarantine, The Loners” heavily focuses on a relationship aspect. Through out the entire book David is constantly being harassed by other factions as they she his new movement as a threat. David shows many moments of sacrifice and selflessness in the book. During the early chapters David has to hide Will in a small janitors closet while David goes out, risking his life to collect food and resources that are necessary for the two to survive. During one of Davids outings he finds a girl he doesn’t know getting chased by a member of varsity, out of selflessness David goes out of his way to save this girl. It is later to be revealed that this girl ‘Lucy’ was Wills old crush from before the school was encapsulated. Will begins to grow envious of David’s heroism because he wants to do more to impress the people around him. David and Lucy begin a relationship and Will’s envy only grows and he goes out of his way to sabotage Davids plans to help out others. At one stage David get kidnapped and Varsity attempts to lynch him, Will and the Loners make out a plan in order to save David and Will is very heroic. Unfortunately Will does not get the recognition for his noble act and his malice towards his brother intensifies.

While reading this novel I grew really fond of the character ‘David’ as he was the most relatable to me. The reason I found David relatable is because through out the book David constantly has to try and do the right thing in order to protect and gain the support of his peers. He demonstrates this when he spends his entire time in the quarantine protecting his brother only for Will to resent David. David is constantly trying to support, please and protect his little brother but he gets harassed because of his good will. For me I’ve had situations where I’ve been trying to do the right thing in order to satisfy my peers but it seemed no matter what I did someone was getting hurt. For me and David it seems that the best thing we could do is find the lesser of the two evils and make some sort of compromise. There were times where I had done as much as I can to maintain a friendship but everything I did seemed to upset them. David has to deal with the struggles of his brother going out of his way to ruin his relationships with other people and I could relate to this feeling. Something the Me and David both found out was that as soon as you find yourself in a position where you are no longer associated with the person we care about, they end up regretting their bitterness towards you and the relationship continues.

I think that the story did a good job at conveying how every character felt and it lead to me relating to a character like David but also I could put others in the shoes of other characters and see a different perspective as to how they might feel in these situations. It was interesting to see how a school might react to having to all of a sudden having to survive in dire conditions and I think that the concept of factions would be a fairly accurate thing that would happen as at school people tend to stick to their friends groups and they’re pretty much just like faction.

In the novel ‘Lord of Flies,’ William Golding tries to convey his message through the use of an important place. The place he uses it ‘The Island’ and he uses it to express the idea of isolation and how it affects human behavior. The book displays this influence because when the group of boys are alone on the island they are no longer being controlled by their parents and have to survive using their natural human instincts. As the story progresses the boys natural nature leads them to fight against one another.

During the first chapter of the book the boys are all on the same page and try to cooperate so they can stay safe and survive. An example of this is when Ralph had the entire group of boys to vote for who they want to lead their group, this shows that they still relate to the civilized world because they are using democracy to make a decision. Further into the book the kids organise themselves into different roles, these include hunters and hit builders.

Day:

The gravel below my bike makes a ‘crunch’ as I whiz into the car park. An enormous cloud of dust trails me as I park my bike, its charcoal black with slick green stripes that crawl up the sides. The wheels are grand yet worn out from the countless hours of riding. Gazing ahead I see a square building with a foul stench polluting the perfume of the air. A blue sign with a picture of two different stick figures is placed next to the doors of this architecture, this signifies that it’s a toilet. The doors are heavy and they slam when they shut. I decide that I don’t need to use this right now. Not to far ahead of me is a silver drinking fountain, upon looking at it my throat becomes as dry as a desert. I bend over and the cool waters infiltrate my throat and cleanses my mind. I am ready.

In front of me is a wooden gate that reaches up to the bottom of my rib cage, the winds blows it open slowly making a creak. I pass through it and I try to shut it but the rickety contraption gets stuck. The blazing sun blinds me as I turn the corner and my eyes squint. Towering over me is a tall piece of landscape that defines the land around me. The mountain has a steep incline that is abruptly discontinued by a ferocious cliff that hangs over the town. The cliff edges are razor-sharp daggers and the dirt on them is the blood from its victims. To my left is the wiry path that will lead me to the top of this elegant mountain. On the sides of the track matagouri populates the tranquil landscape. Tiny cinnamon coloured rabbits scurry up the steep slope.

When walking up a drop of sweat strokes the side of my face and my legs muscle ignite. My breathing starts to speed up. My hot body is refreshed by a cool blast of wind that throws my hair in the other direction. When I reach the top, I am presented with a beautiful township. The lake glistens like a diamond and the mountains opposing me stare down at this graceful community. The air tastes sweet and the wind yells into my delicate ears. The smell of shrubbery tickles my nose. Being here makes feel empowered. I am the king on his throne ready to face what ever challenge comes at me.

Night:

The harsh wind howls like a hungry dire wolf in the night. The eternal darkness consumes everything around me. I enter the same car park that I had once been before, I know it’s the same place but it feels like I’m in a different dimension. Ahead of me lies an ominous structure that strikes me with déjà vu. A single light brightens up the gloomy environment. The awful stench remains except it smells as if it was amplified. Next to the building is the same water fountain, it shimmers from the light being produced from the bathroom. The glassy water trickles onto the stainless steel bowl.

The soft wooden gate remains opens, it is missing a hinge and is dangling like a Christmas Ornament. Up in the sky is a lunar disco ball that shines upon me as if I was a god. Around the moon is an ocean of obsidian with stars that glisten. The angry wind tries to blow me off my feet but I stand strong, looking the mountain right in the eye. The mountain stares back hungrily as if it hadn’t eaten in millions of years, it wants to devour me. The bushes are ballet dancers performing a recital while the drum beat of rabbit feet complement their show. This once exquisite land form is now a monster ready to redefine what pain really is.

When walking up I am fueled with determination, it is controlling me like a parasite. My forehead is a waterfall of salt water and I wipe it away like rain on a windscreen. Standing on top I see the town lit up like a beacon, the cars are like fireflies that roam their tiny little kingdom. The lake looks endless like space and dark like death itself. The air remains sweet like a lollipop and the wind attacks me like I am a criminal. When I stand upon this mountain I wonder, did I conquer it or did it conquer me?

 

 

 

Quiet. The car park is quiet. Upon me is small building that is almost glowing. It has a fowl stench that pollutes the perfume of the air. I can hear sharp crunching beneath my feet as I approach the building. A dim light flickers vigorously.

The rough black item contains the identfication of an individual. Although the object itself has few physical uses, it has the power to let you go anywhere. Upon first glance you may see confusing colouruful patterns but they are the key to exploring new lands. This particular object will not serve a purpose to most people but there is one indivudual who’s entire life has revoled around it.

Ahead of me lied the ominous building. Underneath the bridge was a huge body of water. Within my vision I could finally see the factory. Upon first sight it looked creepy. Behind me was a gate which isolated me from the rest of the world. To my side was the railing of the bridge I was on, falling over them would lead to my demise. Surrounding me was the factory’s henchmen giving me a disgusting look. Entering my ears was an anthem signifying the importance of this place. Around me was an unsettling presence giving me a suspicious vibe.

 

“Your hand, your tongue: look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under’t” – Lady Macbeth

Lady Macbeth uses this metaphor to describe her malicious and corrupt intentions. During this passage Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth informing her about the prophecy that the witches told him. Lady Macbeth becomes power hungry and then reveals her plan to the audience about how she wants to execute King Duncan. She says: “Your hand, your tongue: look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under’t.” This means that she wants to appear humble and friendly towards the king similar to a flower but underneath she is bloodthirsty and ready to kill like a serpent. This is a metaphor because she is directly comparing herself to a flower and a serpent.

Time: After the murder of the king

Event: A porter (clown character) hear knocking at his door on the other side is Macduff and Lenox they were sent to wake him up and the porter confesses to drinking the previous night. Then Macbeth enters and Macduff asks if the king is awake, Macbeth claims that he is still asleep and then Macduff goes to wake Duncan up and finds his dead corpse. Macbeth pretends that he doesn’t know anything about it. They find the unconscious guards holding bloody daggers and their clothes also bloody. Macbeth claims to have killed them out of anger over the king’s death but really Macbeth had killed the king and the guards. He had to kill the guards so they couldn’t defend themselves. Malcolm and Donalbain find out about their father’s death and Lady Macbeth pretends to faint. Banquo is a little suspicious of the circumstances. After not long the characters realize that there must be more behind the murder because the guards would not prosper from the king’s death. Malcolm and Donalbain know that they will be framed for the murder and decide to run away to other countries. Malcolm flees to England and Donalbain goes to Ireland. They believe that they will be safer if they are split apart.

Macduff enters and he believes that Malcolm and Donalbain are responsible for the death of King Duncan and hired the guards to do it. He also informs Rosse that Macbeth is to be the next king

Macbeth asks his servants to bring in two murderers and asks them to go out and kill Banquo and Fleance. He calls upon them to be ambitious and they say that they have nothing to lose and will do anything. Macbeth tells them that he can’t because it would upset his social status.

Time: After he had sent the murderers to take out Banquo

Event: At Forres Lady Macbeth and a servant are in a room and she asks if Banquo has left, this is to inform the audience on what just happened. Lady Macbeth says that although she has achieved what she has wanted, she is burdened because she is worried by the consequences. The servant leaves and Macbeth enters. He talks about how although they have killed Duncan, he is still not out of the woods just yet. I think that the play is foreshadowing that something bad is about to occur

Banquo gets stabbed 20 times in the face. Fleance manages to escape and the murders go back to the castle to inform Macbeth

Act 3, Scene 4 – Summary

Time: During the kings party

Event: Macbeth is at his party and everyone is having a good time. Murderer 1 enters into the room and Macbeth approaches him. The murderer tell Macbeth about Banquo’s death and how Fleance escaped, this means that the prophecy can still occur. While Macbeth is talking and being praised at the table Banquo’s ghost sits on Macbeth’s chair and when Rosse asks him to sit he then see’s Banquo’s corpse looking him in the face. Macbeth is hallucinating. Macbeth begins to freak out and he is asked if he is sick and Lady Macbeth covers for him and says that he is always like this. The ghost disappears and Macbeth can relax again. He says that he can face any creature in the world but this, this is because he is guilty for Banquo’s fate and knows that they were once friends. The spirit reappears and Lady Macbeth has to cancel the party because of his hallucinations. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to man up and that he also needs to sleep because this is was is potentially causing these sights.

Event: Hecate meets with the three witches and says that she is displeased on how the witches meet Macbeth and told him the prophecy without getting her involved. In her anger she claims that she will make Macbeth reach his fate through his own ambition.

Act 3, Scene 6 – Summary

Time: After Macduff has fled to England

Event: Lenox and a Lord are talking and they discuss that Macduff has fled to England. Lenox believes that Malcolm and Donalbain are not responsible for the murder of Duncan. His evidence is that Scotland is restless and starved and that god is punishing them for an act against him.

Act 4, Scene 1 – Summary

Characters: 3 Witches, Hecate, Macbeth

Location: A dark cave

Time: During a thunderstorm

Event: The three witches are in their cave making a unknown substance in their cauldron, it is really powerful because they’re adding lots of weird and rare items. Macbeth enters and wants to know more about the prophecy. Three apparitons are summoned and each one tells him something. The first one is a head in armour and it tells Macbeth to beware of Macduff. The second one is a bloody child and says that nothing born of a woman can kill Macbeth. Then the third one is a crowned child with a tree in his hand and says that Macbeth will vanquished when Birnam Wood goes over Dunsinane hill. Macbeth is satisfied but then he sees eight ghost kings followed by Banquo’s ghost. These are the next kings in line who are descendants of Banquo. They disappear and Lennox enters and tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled. Macbeth says that he will kill Macduff family and followers.

Time: After Macbeth meet with the witches

Event: Rosse informs Lady Macduff about Macduff fleeing the land. Lady Macduff says that he’s a coward but Rosse insists that it’s because he’s wise. Lady Macduff and her son talk about her father and then a messenger enters to warm them about an attack and then two murders enters and kill the son and then the whole castle

Event: Macduff meets up with Malcolm to discuss Macbeth and how they need to stop him. Malcolm offers to become king and tests Macduff by saying that he will be a horrible king and that he will rape the woman and that he will do all these horrible things. But Macduff passes and is loyal to Malcolm

Events: A doctor is talking to a gentle woman. The woman says that Lady Macbeth has been doing strange things in her sleep like putting on her night gown, unlocking her closet, taking some paper, write something, read it, seal it and then go back to bed. Lady Macbeth then enters while sleepwalking, she begins to speak and she expresses her guilt for all that has happened and essentially confesses to being responsible for Duncan’s death. After she goes back to bed and everyone leaves.

Act 5, Scene 2 – Summary

Location: A country near Dunsinane

Event: Menteth says that the English troops are coming lead by Malcolm and they are at Birnamwood. Everyone claims that they dislike Macbeth but they are fighting for Scotland. This scene is used to tell the audience that a war is about to happen. The Scots claim that the English is using youth to fight.

Quote: The English power is near, led on by Malcolm, his uncle Siward, and the good Macduff. Revenges burn in them; for their dear causes would, to the bleeding and the grim alarm, excite the mortified man.

Act 5, Scene 3 – Summary

Location: Dunsinane, a room in the castle

Time: Before a battle

Event: Macbeth is in his room talking to himself pretty much telling himself to stay cool because he cannot be killed by someone born of a woman or until Birnam Wood reaches Dunsinane. A servant enters and tells him that there are 10,000 british troops ready for battle. Macbeth insults the servant for being pale. Macbeth is aware that he is unrespected and that he won’t grow old to be respected. He calls upon Seyton and he confirms the servants intel. A doctor in the room is treating Lady Macbeth and says that she is restless and sick. Macbeth knows why but blames the doctor. The doctor says to the audience that he dislikes Macbeth and wishes that he wasn’t his doctor. Macbeth puts on his armor and heads into battle.

Event: Malcolm leads his troops towards Dunsinane, they discover that they are in Birnam Wood and Malcolm commands his soldiers to take a branch from a tree and use it as camouflage so the enemy thinks that they are smaller than they actually are. They know that his soldiers are not passionate and don’t care and they think that Macbeth’s best chance is to just hide in his castle until they use all of their resources

Event: Macbeth and Young Siward fight and Macbeth kills Young Siward. Macduff, Siward and Malcolm still want to kill Macbeth

Act 5, Scene 8 – Summary

Characters: Macbeth, Macduff

Location: Another part of the field

Time: Day

Event: Macbeth taunts Macduff saying that he has already slaughtered most of his family, they then fight. Macduff says that he has no words for such a person. Macbeth says that he will win because he can only be killed of someone who is not born of a woman. Macduff says that he was ripped from his mother’s womb prematurely so he is not born of a woman. Macbeth says that he will flee and Macduff calls him a coward so Macbeth decides to fight him. They battle and then Macduff slays him.

Act 5, Scene 9 – Summary

Characters: Malcolm, Siward, Rosse, Macduff

Location: Within the castle

Time: Day

Event: Malcolm asks where Macduff and Young Siward are and Rosse says that Young Siward was killed in battle and he had a stab wound on his chest. Old Siward says that it was an honourable death and that he wouldn’t wish for any other. Macduff enters with Macbeth’s head and they hail Malcolm as the king of Scotland. It is also revealed that Lady Macbeth killed herself.

Bronson: Okay, my house is two storied, I lived in Christchurch for a year before I moved to wanaka, I used to own a dog called fudge

Const: second one is a lie

Bronson: James?

James: Last one

Bronson: I have never lived in chch. Twas a lie

James: Did u have a dog named fudge? I swear it was something

Bronson: Na, it was called fudge. Except she died 5 or 6 years ago
